Sonar By Night
The Chemical Brothers (UK): For no less than 13 years, Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands have been the indisputable kings of a new form of pop which they themselves created. Powerful beats bathed in rock, hip-hop, and soul. Everything counts when they take control. As it was in the beginning, as it is now, with “Push The Button,” so will it be forever.

James Murphy (US): Murphy’s genius has been associated with the triumph of such names as The Rapture, the DFA label, and LCD Soundsystem, his personal project. But this New Jersey native has much more at his fingertips. An infinite range of rhythms that only he could combine with such perfection. From house to the new wave of New York rock in the blink of an eye.

Miss Kittin (SW): A very healthy sense of humour and an idea of electro and techno-pop that goes beyond pure revivalism have made Caroline Hervé one of the most relevant figures on the European circuit. Electro sexy, vibrant, intelligent, with the undeniable added charm of Miss Kittin’s voice and charisma.

Cut Chemist (US): While the name Lucas Macfadden might sound familiar in association with prestigious groups Ozomatli and Jurassic 5, his expertise at the turntable is boundless enough that his nickname strikes a resounding chord by itself. This is due to the fact that Cut Chemist is simply one of the most highly regarded scratchers on the planet, as he makes undoubtedly clear on “The Litmus Test” and each time he sidles up to the turntable.

The Soft Pink Truth (US): Sidekick of Björk, creative half of Matmos, graduate in Renaissance literature and eternal provocateur. What more could you ask of Drew Daniel? Possibly, "Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Soft Pink Truth?", his brilliant second record.

Ellen Allien (DE): The founder and flagship of Berlin-based label B-Pitch Control is always a sure thing when it comes to quality, thanks to an unconventional approach to the dance floor in which the electro of corrosive basses and the most imaginative techno insinuate new, unexplored paths.

Richie Hawtin (CA): At this M-nus gathering the father of the creature had to be present… The grand master of techno minimalism takes the reins in order to show once again who is in control: repetitive electronic, straightforward Detroit techno of the first order. M-nus is more.

Joris Voorn (NL): The success of “Muted Trax” and “Lost Memories” resulted in a rolling out of the red carpet for Voorn to the VIP lounge of international techno. And it doesn’t stop there. Voorn is sponsored by Technasia and is rubbing shoulders with industry heavyweights in the wake of his acclaimed LP “Future History”, with a soundtrack that bounces between electro, breaks, and, above all, good techno.

Jeff Mills (US): Without the non-stop work of Jeff Mills over the last two decades, techno would have another flavour. That’s because this pioneer among pioneers is responsible, in large part, for what today we understand as “techno”. Intense sets of electronic percussion charged with meaning and physicality played at full throttle as only Mills knows how to do.

Ada (DE): It has been said that Michaela Dippel could be the tech-house version of The Strokes. Similarities aside, Dippel’s melodic tracks and spacious rhythms drink from a inexhaustible well of tricks and ideas coming from pop, rock, and popular electronic, light years away from the rest.

Mark One + Virus Syndicate (UK): Out of his studio in Sheffield, Mark One became one of the pioneers of British drum’n’bass, yet his restless creative mind soon resulted in his becoming a key figure on the grime scene. Presently he plays with the Manchester-based group Virus Syndicate, whose sound is an amalgam of garage, breaks, dubstep and whatever remains in between.

Laurent Garnier (FR): Many indulge in eclecticism but few are able to do it as well as Monsieur Garnier. Only he is capable of combining reggae, rock, house, drum'n'bass, acid, hip-hop and techno to arrive at sets that make history.

Dj Yoda (UK): Cut-and-paste taken to its ultimate extreme. A mammoth sonic collage in which INXS and Aerosmith are mixed flawlessly with an assortment of classic and contemporary hip-hop. All accompanied by visuals that are not merely eye candy. Q Magazine included Dj Yoda in its list of “The 10 Djs you must see before you die”.

Mu (JP): MU is in the midst of a world tour with the hit “Paris Hilton” and the album “Our of Breach”, sequel to “Afro Finger and Gel”, one of the big surprises of 2003. Maurice Fulton, producer of house and one half of the group, describes the invention as punk music you can dance to. Mutsumi Kanamori, performer and the other half of the project, provides the glamour. Disco-punk at its most chic.

Voices:
Roisin Murphy (UK): Moloko’s vocalist is much more than that. She has proven it in “Ruby Blue”, her first solo album produced and blessed by Matthew Herbert. She is accompanied by eight musicians that make her voice and imagination properly shine. Avant-house meets pop.

M.I.A. (UK): Supported by the rank and file of the highly acclaimed Dj Diplo, young Maya Arulpragasam, born in Sri Lanka and resident of London, is one of the most original acts in contemporary urban music. Ragga, dancehall, ethnic touches and an absolutely original voice capable of dropping authentic time bombs on the dance floor.

Jamie Lidell (UK): We had to wait a long time to get our hands on the new Lp by Jamie Lidell. Finally, the voice and charisma of Super_Collider are officially back with “Multiply”. A tremendous display of talent, magnetism and electronic histrionics extremely difficult to typecast. As usual, light years away from everything.

De La Soul (US): Starting with the mythical "3 Feet High and Rising" until the most recent "The Grind Date", Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove and Pasemaster Mase have written several important pages in the history of rap. After 16 years, this NY trio still has the status of a hip-hop legend, loaded with positivism, jazz roots, a message and good vibrations.

Subtle (Anticon/US): Making a giant step from the foundations of hip-hop, a form which since the days of Anticon they have always questioned, Doseone and Jel have recruited four extraordinary allies to give form to this sextet. Violas, guitars, samplers, keyboards and cellos, all in perfect harmony and defying the laws of what is conventional. Avant-rap in capital letters from Oakland.

Afra (JP): Author of the devastating "Digital Breath", sponsored by Scott “Prefuse 73” Herren, he holds by popular acclaim the title of the most influential beat boxer in the East. A whirlwind of beats, breaks and imaginative loops, created solely with the help of his thoracic cavity.

Noah23 (US): Born in Mississippi, raised in Ontario, and with ten years experience in the music business, this sharp MC obsessed by astrology (his third Lp is titled “Jupiter Sajitarius”) applies surreal acidity to classic hip-hop.

Sólo Los Solo (ES): Juan Sólo and his inseparable partner Griffi are two veterans of the national scene. Without them the word rap wouldn’t mean anything in Spain. The most progressive vision of hip-hop in the country, with personality, roots and no concessions whatsoever.

Duplex aka Edan & Insight (US): Titles such as “The beauty and the beat” clearly show Edan’s mood, a performer who sometimes accompanies his special idea of hip-hop (lots of soul and jazz) with the flow of Insight. Madness and class holding hands.

Bands
LCD Soundsystem (US): In 2002, James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy revolutionized half of the world’s dance floors with the hit “Losing My Edge”, and since then the duo hasn’t looked back. Their upbeat, clever concoction of disco, punk, and rock have carried them and the DFA label to the pinnacle of success. In short, the group of the year. Indispensable.

Le Tigre (US): Since 1988, this New York-based trio has kept the flame of the riot grrrls alive with an intelligent mix of techno-pop, punk, tons of nerve and visuals ranging from the naïve to the provocative. Fresh electro-feminism, fun, with catchy choruses, all there on the group’s most recent album “This Island”.

Soulwax (BE): Luxorious re-mixers (Felix Da Housecat, Kylie Minogue, Playgroup, DJ Shadow…) and responsible for the electronic sound of “Any Minute Now”, brothers David and Stephen Dewaele seem to have made an effort over the years to sabotage any attempt to describe exactly what they do. Absolute originality and success.

Mouse On Mars (DE): From their influential beginnings in Too Pure until the days of Sonig, the group’s respected label, Andi Toma and Jan St.Werner have been able to demonstrate, with clear-sightedness and imagination, the various possible futures of pop. Advanced music filled with passion, melodies, and unmistakable rhythms.

The Durutti Column (UK): Vini Reilly has been a legend of musical independence since the late seventies. Rising from the ashes of punk with an avant-garde attitude, The Durutti Column has struggled since then to distance itself from conventional sonic structures, giving shape to a timeless, informal, universal brand of music.

Hurtmold + Rob Mazurek (BR-US): The collaboration of Hurtmold, considered the avant-garde band of Brazilian post-rock, and Rob Mazurek, an icon of the post-rock genre, is proof that the slow, introspective sound of Chicago is not the exclusive property of that city. A concert steeped in heavy guitars and scintillating emotions.

Hood (UK): With the release of “Outside Closer”, the foursome from Leeds has radically distanced itself from indietronic, emphasizing songs, experimental rock, and a more immediate intimacy with its own sound. A change for a band that always surprises.

To Rococo Rot (DE): Hotel Morgen did not signify simply the incorporation of To Rococo Rot into the Domino family: It also served as a reminder that, nine years after its almost spontaneous formation, the Berlin trio remains on fertile ground for ideas. Electronic post-pop of the first order.

Radian (AT): Some years ago, the fusion of the most evasive post-rock with abstract electronic gave rise to Radian, a trio of experimental Viennese that thanks to such weighty works as “Juxtaposition” and “rec.extern” have become one of the top bands in experimental rock.

The Beautiful People (NO): Delicate, revivalist pop prepared with painstaking care from Norway. A convincing mix of the legacy of Joy Division and the best of classic technopop luxuriously dressed for the occasion and with the charismatic voice of Ådne Meisland as a backbone to boot.

Battles (US): The foursome of Ian Williams (from Don Caballero), Dave Konopka, Tyondai Braxton and John Stanier remains at the forefront of international post-rock, thanks to an indescribable superimposition of effects (from jazz to beat boxing) and unparalleled instrumental mastery.

Efterklang (DK): The Danish sextet captured half of the world, including the prestigious British label Leaf, to which they are signed, with the EP entitled “Springer”. It signalled the beginning of a promising trajectory that should take them very far. Acoustic landscapes, bucolic electronic, suggestive video-collages, and enveloping subtleness.

Brazil's new underground:
Artificial: Kassin combines his job as producer in Monoaural (the studio where he composes jingles and TV sound tracks) with performances with the trio completed by Moreno Veloso and Domenico Lancelloti. He is also a sound terrorist, for which he is known as Artificial. Under this alias, and with the help of a Game Boy console, Kassin creates his own world of broken beats, white noise and low definition melodies as he did on the album "Free USA".

M. Takara: With a formal musical education that allows him to combine percussion with keyboards, trumpet, vibraphone and computer, this young Brazilian, who is a member of Hurtmold and regular collaborator of fellow countrymen Otto and Instituto, merges post-rock with bossa, dub, jazz and the most innovative and brave electronic music. These elements all appear on his solo debut album “M. Takara” (Submarine, 2003).

Hurtmold + Rob Mazurek: The collaboration of Hurtmold, considered the avant-garde band of Brazilian post-rock, and Rob Mazurek, an icon of the post-rock genre and member of Chicago Underground and Isotope 217, is proof that the slow, introspective sound of Chicago rock is not the exclusive property of that city. A concert steeped in heavy guitars and scintillating emotions.

Japan's new rythems
TowaTom (DE-JP): After meeting at SonarSound Tokyo last year, prolific Uwe Schmidt (aka Señor Coconut, Atom Heart and many more) and legendary deejay of Deee-Lite, Towa Tei, join forces in a project that gets the best of each. Risky pop, Latin touches, exuberant electronics and digital exoticism.

Afra: Author of the devastating "Digital Breath", produced by Prefuse 73, holds by popular acclaim the title of the most influential beat boxer in the East. A whirlwind of beats, breaks and imaginative loops, created solely with the help of his thoracic cavity.

Baku + Msc: Two indispensable names in the underground hip-hop scene of Japan. MSC –Mic Space Cru–, authors of such touchstones as "Teiko-Houkai” or “MATADOR”, join forces with Baku, one of the most prominent Dj's in the country, to give a wide sample of oriental skills.

Jiffrock: The art of scratch has in DJ Jifrock one of its most important exponents in Japan, along with other stars such as Shun and Kentaro. Appearing often in tightly disputed finals of international championships, Jifrock’s studied tricks have earned him the applause of the most demanding specialists.
web

Tatsuki: Established in Denmark, this Japanese citizen is the regular vinyl manipulator in an unclassifiable band called Blue Foundation. With the band, but also solo, Tatsuki Oshima has been working hard to redefine the limits of turntablism with the help of technological tools and the traditional turntable itself.

Rei Harakami & Shiro Takatani: Since his debut in 1998 with "Unrest" until his latest work "Lust", Harakami has attained the status of worshiped producer in his native Japan. He has worked with Great3, Nobukazu Takemura and Cold Cut. On this occasion, he continues his collaboration (begun at Sonarsound Tokyo, in 2004) with Shiro Takatani, founder of the group Dumb Type and first-rate visual artist.

World's End Girlfriend: Featured in interesting catalogues such as those of Third Ear, Forfull, Young-Z, Current, Noble and Cubic Music, labels which have fallen in love with the group’s moving and temperamental species of electronic. Strange and complex landscapes that invite us to disappear.

Yamauchi: Masateru Yamauchi is one of the main members of the new Japanese electronic school. Mixing broken rhythms and drum'n'bass with a distinctive voice, endless details and melodic games, this new acquisition of Third Ear presents a rich and positivist vision of electronic music.

Specials:
Richie Hawtin heeft drie performances op Sonar. Het meest bijzondere is waarschijnlijk het concert dat hij in het Auditorium geeft met het 'Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya', dj/rupture en Doseone: "For the third year in a row, L’Auditori de Barcelona presents a musical act of exceptional character. The Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC), directed on this occasion by maestro Pedro Alcalde, will collaborate with Richie Hawtin, dj/rupture and Doseone. Afterwards it will perform a repertoire focusing on the concept of landscaping, with appropriate visual support.

Unlike other years, the concert will consist of two types of performances:

In the first part, Richie Hawtin, dj/rupture and Doseone will interact with the OBC, each playing two pieces, in an intense face-to-face with the Orchestra.

Following the example of Pan Sonic in Sónar 2004, the OBC will adapt to Richie Hawtin’s repertoire, performing two compositions of the Canadian artist. The OBC performances have been composed by Pedro Alcalde and Sergio Caballero.

In dj/rupture and Doseone’s case, two new lines of sound experimentation open up between electronic or amplified forms and OCB’s acoustic instrumentation. On one side, dj/rupture, sound manipulator and specialist in the mixing of musical traditions, puts the spotlight on collage and scratching. On the other side, voice will play an important role in Doseone’s recitation, one of the most personal Mc’s on the international scene.

In the second part, the OCB will perform an exclusive repertoire written for the occasion and in keeping with the central theme of SonarMática 2005: landscaping.

The performances will be accompanied by visuals created by top video artists who will work on the music pieces assigned to them."
