Natalia Data is a DJ and a music producer. Born in Russia, having lived in Lithuania, US and now residing in the UK she developed a very unique and diverse musical identity. She never limited herself to one style, which in the end became her style - eclectic dance music. Anything electronic and danceable; be it tech-house, electro, breaks, leftfield - all goes as long as it is interesting and different from the mainstream.
Natalia began DJing at the age of 18 in Lithuania. She was playing tapes and reel-to-reels of mad hardcore, acid and rave underground music. The tunes were often ripped off the pirate radio and Satellite TV for the luck of proper records and CDs.
When she moved to the US the passion for DJing became obvious. While studying fashion at Cornell University in New York State she spent every extra bit of money on buying records. The move to New York City gave her more exposure to the club scene. Still, it would be the Winter Music Conference 2000 that changed Natalia’s life. “Meeting Adam Freeland was very inspiring. I never paid attention to breakbeat before I heard him DJ in Miami. It changed my style completely. I came back to New York and started asking for breakbeat records in the shops, but not much was available…” She then decided to move to the UK.
Today Natalia is on the way to make her dreams and ambitions worthwhile. She has made it into the 10 finalists of the famous Cream Resident Competition run by Cream and supported by Muzik Magazine by winning the heat in Leeds in August 2002. In DJ Magazine Top 100 for 2003 James Zabiela had mentioned Natalia as one of the best undiscovered DJs. This is an honour deserved by investing masses of time and effort into DJing, promoting parties and producing.
This year Natalia has performed all around Europe and as far as Moscow, where she played in club Ministerstvo. Other clubs include Geburstag Klub (Berlin), Chalet Disco (Rome), CitiMETRO (Lithuania), Tochka (Bulgaria), Display (Den Haag, Netherlands) Alchemy @ Fluid and Twisted Angels @ Turnmills in London. Presently a resident at Mono Bar in Southampton, she runs her own night Sandwiches, which has seen the local underground celebrities like James Zabiela, Paul Hester and Moonface drop by to spin a few tunes. She has been offered a residency at the new club Fresh which is due to open its doors in January 2005.
Becoming a presenter of the Qaraj Show on Ministry of Sound Radio in April 2004 provides Natalia with the perfect platform to take her eclectic sound across the globe. Previous experiences in radio include guest shows on Groove Tech Radio (Excession show hosted by James Zabiela), Barebass Radio and Proton Radio.
A competitive, but very musically enlightening atmosphere in the UK has stimulated Natalia to get moving with her production ideas. "Sometimes A Kebab Is Just A Kebab" a funny titled breakbeat track had been charted in Muzik magazine in June 2002 by James Zabiela and got the attention of Lee Burridge who played it in one of his sets at Fabric, London. "Hit and Run", featuring lovely vocal from Elisabeth Jonson from Sweden has made it into the Radio 1 One music Demo Chart in February 2003.
